What are breast shields and nipple cushions and why might I need them?

Your pump uses a breast shield to connect your nipple with the pump. If it does not fit, it can have an impact on milk volume and comfort. Elvie makes these in 21mm, 24mm and 28mm.

If you have smaller sized nipples you might also need Elvie Nipple Cushions. These fit inside 24mm breast shields (which are included with all our pumps).

How do I measure my nipple?

What do I need to measure?

To avoid inaccurate measurements, do not measure yourself directly after pumping or breastfeeding.
The base of your nipple is where it meets the areola. The areola is the circular patch of darker skin on your breast.

How do I measure my nipple size?

Grab a ruler and a debit/credit card.
Perk up one of your nipples.
Hold a card at the end of the ruler so it creates a right angle. (Make sure the edge of the card lines up with 0mm).
Standing in front of a mirror, rest the base of your nipple in the corner between the ruler and card.
Your measurement is where the base of your nipple is widest.
